Thankyou frederickay,

Would be very helpful. Many hands make light work. Jean has been fantastic.
The 58yrs old mother,  Catherine, died in 1909...It certainly is very scarey!!!!

Cheers Tiff

Hello Tiff,
My last message has disappeared into thin air, so will post this one and see what happens. The information may now be out of order.

Lyttelton Times, Thurs Jan 27, 1876
Page 2, Column 3

FATAL ACCIDENT: A man named Archibald Sutherland died at the hospital yesterday from the effects of an accident which occured to him at Brookside a few days ago. It seems he was in the employ of Mr D Reese, builder, and while at work on the new school he fell from a scaffold, seriously injuring his spine. He was removed to the Christchurch Hospital by the first train, but medical treatment was of no avail, and he died as stated above. An inquest will be held at the hospital at 2pm today.

Lyttleton Times, 28 Jan, 1876
Page 2, Column 4

INQUEST: An inquest was held before Dr Coward at the hospital, yesterday afternoon, on the body of Archibald Sutherland, who died on Wednesday from injuries received by an accident at Brookside on Thursdaty Jan 20. It appeared that deceased, who was a plasterer by trade, was working at the new school, when he fell from the scaffolding to the ground - a distance of about ten feet. Deceased's spine was fractured by the fall, and two of his ribs were broken. He was conveyed to the Hospital the same day, but never rallied as already stated. A verdict of "Accidental Death" was returned.

Finally, (and I never really understand these statements)

Christchurch Archives
Letters of Administration to Barbara Sutherland 2 June 1876, widow

She says that Archibald's estate is less than Pounds 350.

James Tait, builder, and George Innes, bricklayer, are the sureties for her, and either together or singularly promise Pounds 700

No other family members mentioned.

I do not know what this means - perhaps some one else can now step in

Wow!!! Jean this is marvellous...thankyou so much for all your research & time. Have learnt so much more about George & family.

You're spoiling me, even looking up ChCh Archives. Sounds as tho' James, builder & George, bricklayer  must have an agreement in some form to pay monies to either of their families in the case of an accident. Not sure myself.

Might try googling Court Star of Canterbury to see what sort of order he belonged to.

Very interesting info. Jean..very much appreciated.
