1901 Leftovers: Need help with Excel
« on: Tuesday 29 May 07 19:05 BST (UK) »
I am attempting to transcribe a couple of 1901 Census sheets, but have a couple of queries. Firstly, one person has, under Occupation, 'Living on own means'. How will I fit this into the allotted space?
Secondly, I have never used Excel before and wonder how I reduce the number of available coumns to the 12 required. Oh! and a third query. How do I thicken a dividing line? Which ruler do I need? If this sounds as if it is coming from an idiot, you're probably right :)
Thanks in advance.

Hi Orinoco,

Nice to hear you want to do some transcriptions for the "1901 Leftovers"  :) :)

1) Occupation will be in column H.  just hover the cursor on the line between column H and column I (on the line where the H and I are) and the cursor will change to a +  When you see this, hold down the left mouse button, and move the cursor to the right. The column size will increse.

2) don't worry about the size, the empty cells don't add much.

3) Don't worry about lines and boxes, unless you want them for yourself; I only extract the text from the table, anyway, to load to the 1901 website, so I don't need the lines.

If you haven't already seen it, then there are tips on this page:

Best to send just one page first, and I'll let you know how it is.

Thanks, and Good luck,  :)
Bob
