McLachlan Help Please !!!
« on: Wednesday 30 May 07 02:58 BST (UK) »
Hi Guys

I'm stuck on one of my decsendants.

Ann McLachlan or McLachlan born 1843/5 in ???

She married Dugald McKinnon 25/05/1851 in Kilmallie.

Dugald was born 01/10/1830 in Banavie, Kilmallie.

I have had no luck trying to find her on the IGI circa 1834/5.

The only Ann's l found were born Tobermory, Kilfinian, Kilninian and Lismore. None of the places are even close to Banavie. It doesn't mean she isn't one of them but they didn't really move about in them days did they.

A few more eyes are better than my own.

I can't find Ann and Dugald in the 1851 census.

So......any ideas on her birth?
And...could someone look up the 1851 census and hopefully they may be living with her parents

Thanks in Advance

a very frustrated

There's a Dugald McKinnon born abt 1829 in Kilmalie, Argylesh on the 1851 Census. He was living at Banavil Ard and was an agricultural labourer.

Year: 1851
Parish Kilmallie
ED: 1
Line: 11

not sure if this is of any help..

Arkie...

Hi Robert

The date of the 1851 census was 30 March that year so your couple would still not have married at that point. Arkwright's entry for Dugald will probably be him as a bachelor boy and living with his parents John and Mary and siblings.

Have you got Dugald and Ann in the 1861 census. Can't easily see them. Also can't see any children for them on IGI, maybe down to the spelling variants for McKinnon which IGI doesn't always pick up on.

Regards.

Monica

Dugald and Ann immigrated to Australia in the 1850's on her death cert over here it does not give anything on her parents and as l said earlier l cannot find her 100% on the IGI.

I know Dugalds parents but not hers.

Hey Zimmerman,

Have you tried the variations of Ann's surname? Like McLaughlan and McLauchlan etc. Hope that helps..

Hi there

My two bits worth......I'd be very surprised if Ann isn't in Kilmallie for the 1851 census (providing she wasn't out of twon or she didn't get skipped for some reason!)  Two months is not long before her wedding and usually the marriage occured in the parish of the bride.  I'm puzzled though at your dates.  If the marriage date is firm and you have it documented in 1851 then I very much doubt your birth year range for Ann is correct.  She'd be less than 10 by my calculation  ???  Something is not right there!  Here is a listing of ALL the Ann* 's in Kilmallie for the 1851 that fit her surname with approx year of birth, place of birth, and status noted.....

Ann McLachlan born abt 1828  Morvern, Argyll  Daughter
Ann McLachlan born abt 1806  Slead, Inverness  Wife
Ann McLachlan born abt 1849  Kilmallie, Argylesh  Daughter
Ann McLachlan  born abt 1827  Kilmallie, Argyle  Niece
Ann McLachlan  born abt 1801  Kilmallie, Argyle  Head
Ann McLachlan  born abt 1826  Kilmallie, Argyle  Sister
Ann McLachlan  born abt 1822  Kilmallie, Argyle  Wife
Ann McLachlan  born abt 1844  Camusnagaul, Argyllsh  Daughter  l
Anne McLachlan born abt 1799  Kilmallie, Invernesssh  Wife
Jessie Ann McLachlan born abt 1841  Kilmallie, Argylesh  Daughter

From this list it's pretty safe to cull those that are already married and those that are too young to marry in 1851 which brings you to just these 3:

Ann McLachlan born abt 1828  Morvern, Argyll  Daughter
Ann McLachlan  born abt 1827  Kilmallie, Argyle  Niece
Ann McLachlan  born abt 1826  Kilmallie, Argyle  Sister

I would think it worthwhile to try and trace these ladies forward to 1861 and see if any are missing.  Also worthwhile to take note of any naming patterns from births in Australia that may tie back into these households.

Hope this is helpful

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Zimmerman

:) No prob with the fingers......been there and done that too many times. :)

I realize none of the ladies I narrowed up to are born anywhere near this year...or at least are not enumerated as born in this year!  I know my own family were legendary fibbers on the age....usually though rounding down instead of up so these choices might very well not be useful to you......but they do need to be positively eliminated before attempting to look further.

Best wishes
Jean
