Moved back to Antrim at the request of Caltha, even though I do know that Bangor is in County Down.

You beat me to it Nell. I've just posted a report to Moderator :D

Caltha,

I've looked at Bangor, Co. Down in the 1910 Ulster Towns Directory which is on the Library Ireland website.

It lists three people named McNeill. The interesting ones are ...

Mrs Martha McNeill, The Yachtsman Hotel, 1-3, Main Street.
The Grand Hotel, Mrs Annie O'Hara, proprietress - 18-20, Quay Street

The Royal Hotel today is located at 26-28, Quay Street.

I've been in touch with the Royal Hotel. The young lady who spoke to me had not heard about McNeills owning the hotel. Like myself as far as she's aware the Royal Hotel has always been in the hands of the O'Hara family.

I've been in to the branch library to check the indexes for the Co. Down Spectator from 1904 and Newtownards Chronicle from 1901. Neither mention the McNeil brothers or the Royal Hotel although a search through the papers might reveal something.

I'm looking for any information on the above whom I believe the were involved in the running of the hotel from around 1900 +/- 5 years. Any pictures from the era would also be helpful.

David,

Some of the members of the Bangor Historical Society may have old photographs or put you in touch with someone who has some. Their email address is in the link.

Thanks again Chris.  I have already contacted the society and various pother groups in the city.  I'll try to clarify the date that I know that they were there, although I think it may have been 1900-1901-02.

What were the names of the brothers, David?

The North Down and Ards branch of the North of Ireland Family History Society meet in Bangor so they may have a member or two who can give you some useful suggestions. The Society is not a research agency but may be able to put you in touch with someone interested in the history of Bangor at the beginning of the century.

I'm not certain when the O'Hara family moved from the Royal Hotel. They bought a hotel in Fermanagh in the 1960s. I contacted that hotel and learnt that the family are no longer there but was reminded of another hotel at Aghadowey in Co. Derry which has been in their hands for four generations. There may well be some documents giving a history of their hotels. If there are they are probably in the hands of the family at the moment.

Hi Christopher

Moses was one of the Brothers and I think that the other was William, or maybe Henry (Harry).
