General Kent question... Mariner by occupation
« on: Wednesday 30 May 07 21:59 BST (UK) »
Hello folks,
My ancestor Mark Anthony was a mariner

he married:
     SARAH YOUNG
9 MAR 1824      Saint Mary The Virgin, Dover
His son was born WILLIAM ANTHONY
Christened    19 JAN 1825   at the 'Lying In Hospital'  Endell Street, Holborn.
Parents MARK ANTHONY and SARAH. This was a hospital for married women husband was one of many professions including 'sailor'

He died Dec 1841
at Hackney

I can find no other information and wondered if, as he was a mariner he would have been possibly working in Dover, rather than actually being born in Dover. Was Dover, being a port, a place where mariners would be in those days. I am not even sure if mariner and sailor are the same thing !!
Any ideas would be welcome
Brenda

Hi Brenda

Mariner and sailor are one and the same -   seaman is another description

Thanks Carole,
A mariner sounds much more romantic than a sailor !!!
Even the name Mark Anthony has a certain ring !!
I hope I will be able to find a record of him one day.
Cheers
Brenda

Have you found him on the 1841 census?  That would tell you if he was born in Middlesex or not and would give you an age to within 5 years.

There are a couple of Mark Anthony's on the IGI born around Plymouth which would be a good area for mariners.

Thanks for the reply Sylviaann
I have found a death entry in 1841 for a a Mark Anthony at Hackney.  This was registered in the 4th quarter.
I think that I may have found an entry in 1841 for the son William aged 15, although can't be sure that this is indeed the right people,
1841. census
HO107/0664/6/F24 pages 1&2
3, Elder Walk
Finsbury
Islington
Hannah Anthony           30   (probably should be aged 35)
William Anthony             15  lab
Hannah eliz Anthony    10
Thos wm Anthony           8
wm anthony                     5
Robt. King                       45 cordwainer
Elizth Young                   25
All born in the county.

So all in all quite a difficult task finding the family.
Regards
Brenda

Hi Brenda

I will take a look at the St Mary's records to see what I can find for you.

Dover, being a port, has been a temporary or permanent home to many thousands of mariners / sailors / seamen / boatmen over the centuries, some of whom were born here, some settled here, and some were just passing through.

Regards, Bill

Thanks a lot Bill,
I do think that maybe my Mark Anthony could have been from the London area and was in Dover 'working' when he married.
The son does appear to be born in London. So I don't know if Mark was in London when the son was born or if he stayed in Kent !!
This family group have been very evasive so far !!

You could try a search of Parishregister http://www.parishregister.com/searchpage.html
Plenty of Mariners did live around the Thames and he could have been born there.
The index is free to search but there is a small amount to pay to see the actual transcriptions.
Worth a look anyway

Thanks Sylviaann,
I have looked at that site that you suggested and found just one Mark Anthony from around the London Dock area.
I think that my Mark Anthony would probably have been from around the Islington area if he weren't born Dover.
I can't even guess at his approximate date of birth.
So I guess that he will remain elusive for ever ??
I shall however, continue to look for clues (as we do !!)
