Shorncliffe Camp, Kent in 1901. Which regiments were there?
« on: Thursday 31 May 07 11:27 BST (UK) »
Hello

I wonder if anyone would know which regiments were based at Shorncliffe Camp in Kent for the 1901 Census.

I have a missing great-great grandfather named William Windsor, who was born inBrighton in 1864 but does not appear at home on the 1901 census. His wife is listed as Married rather than Widow, and I know they had another couple of children after 1901, so no chance he was deceased.

The closest match I can find for him anywhere in the country is named as Walter Windsor, born in Brighton in 1866, listed as an "inmate" in the above camp.

Any help to narrow down whether this was my elusive ancestor, and why he was in the army at the time (I'd assume this would be for Boer, but could it be another reason?), would be most appreciated

Thanks

Glen

Hi Glen !

I can't help you with the regiments at Shorncliffe I'm afraid - although when I had the same problem I looked among the officers and then followed the senior ones up - most officers are reasonably well documented !

Also if you search RootsChat .... you'll find a few references to Shorncliffe ..... maybe you'll be able to pick up some ideas !

Hi Annie, how're you doing?

Great idea to trace the officers. I'll give that a go.

I am reasonably (well, sort of 50%-ish!) sure that Walter is William, since there appear to be no other males with the surname Windsor born in Brighton between 1859 and 1869 apart from William and his brother George on any subsequent census, so all the evidence available is that he was a soldier at the time, but it strikes me that he was getting a bit long in the tooth to sign up unless it was for the Boer War.

Thanks and take care

Glen  :)
