It depends on where he lived, and when he lived.  You need other information before you can get to the occupation, unless you are looking for his enlisted occupation, in which case you ned to know which country and which service, and preferrably an enlistment number, and you can contact them directly for his service record.

Hi  :)

If you are talking post 1901 (so wouldn't have an occupation on 1901 census), then his marriage and childrens birth certificates will give occupation at the time of these events. (his death cert would also probably say what his occupation was)

Catherine  :)

(if he had a trade, then he'd probably appear in some trade directory, but not sure what, if any, are available for early/mid 1900s  :-\ maybe someone else knows?.....

pps. if he was having children just after the war, it may give his rank (speaking from personal experience anyway, maybe I was just lucky)

Hi,

This looks like the death registration for your grandfather:

Walter Addison Mincher  Dec 1986 Wolverhampton W.Midlands  34  624

birth date given as 23 Sep 1914

A copy of his death certificate should show his occupation; his occupation will also be shown on his marriage certificates and the birth certificates of his children.

Copy certificates can be purchased on line at www.gro.gov.uk.

Hope this helps,

Nanny Jan

Hiya trish,

The death notices for Walter in one of the Wolverhampton papers might help. Sometimes employers insert
a notice when an employee dies. If he worked for the one company from the time he left the army at the
end of WWII until the time he retired there may well have been a notice from his employers.

If you're still around the Midlands region, Wolverhampton Archive (I think currently still on Snow Hill but soon moving to the Molyneux Hotel) have the Express&Star and Chronicle etc on microfilm.

Wolverhampton Registry Office are also very efficient if you order certificates direct from them.
