« on: Friday 01 June 07 12:31 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for my MARTIN ancestors.....

Thomas MARTIN, b. abt 1836 Eltham, Kent.  Lived in "Fryths Buildings" ?  Possibly married Emma STEAD in 1857 ?

and ancestors of the above person ?  They all seemed to live around Eltham Church / High Street area.
RIP 1949-10th January 2013

Best Wishes,  Nick.

Hi Nick

Do you have your Thomas on all the available census ie. do the early (1841/1851 census) give any indication of his parents?

It looks like you have him in 1851, living in Elham in what looks to me like 'Friths' Buildings. The funny thing is, also living there is a Richard Skinner born Deal, who may well be one of my Deal Skinners that I haven't discovered yet! Spooky  ;D

There's a christening on FamilySearch for
Thomas Martin  26 JUL 1835   Saint John, Eltham, Kent.
 Parents William Martin & Mary.
It's an extracted record, ( Batch number C067821  1831 - 1846  0307731   Film ) so should be reliable, & the parents names tie in with the 1841 & 1851 censuses.

There's 27 MARTINs of Elham christenings on that same batch number. I haven't looked at all of them, but there's a William  05 JAN 1834  Saint John, Eltham, Kent.  Death 23 FEB 1834 Parents William & Mary.

Hi and thanks for the welcome !

Yes I think that's him.  However it seems an unlikely marriage - he was a bricklayer, and she came from a fairly well-to-do family.  I'm waiting for the son's birth certificate, then I'll be able to see the mother's maiden name.  I'm still quite new to all this - I've only been researching for a couple of months.  Thanks for your help !  :)

P.S. re your other post - I'm referring to Eltham in Kent, not Elham - I get confused between those two !
RIP 1949-10th January 2013

Best Wishes,  Nick.

Hmmm... sorry !  In my confusion this morning, I entered the wrong generation.  I have William and Mary, but I can't go any further back than 1811.  I've ordered a copy of the St John Parish registers from the Kent FHS, but they haven't arrived yet.

Sorry for the confusion, but I'm still a newbie at all this !

No need to apologise, it's easy to get confused  ;D
There's 27 MARTINs of Elham
Of course I meant Eltham!!
I hope you find what you are looking for when you get the copies of the parish registers.
