GREEN - Chelmsford
« on: Friday 01 June 07 13:57 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for a Philip Green, in or around Chelmsford.
According to his daughters marriage certificate he was a farmer.

Phoebe Green was born in Chelmsford about 1813.
She married John Rixon, a Coachman in 22 Oct 1837 in St Martin in the Fields, Middlesex.
There's no sign of Philip on the 1841 census but I did find a Sarah Green, aged 60, Laundress and Philip Green aged 20, Male Servant, in Springfield near Chelmsford. This could be his widow. There seem to be quite a few Green's in Chelmsford but nothing to point me in the right direction.
Has anyone access to these parish records?

Hi tanwehaf,

The PRs of Chelmsford, Moulsham and Springfield are online and free to view in the Essex Record's Office SEAX system.

http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/login.asp

At the login page that comes up click on "Guest"
Go to the right hand side of the next page and click on "Image search"
Then on the next page, in the "Text to search for" field, type in the name of the parish e.g. springfield parish register.

Good luck.
Concentrating currently on:
Essex: Card, Harris, Stowell, Theobald/Tibbles & Turner.
Norfolk: Beale, Cork & Dalton.
Yorkshire: Oswald Sturdy birth/baptism c1708, Oswald where the devil are you?

Thank you SO MUCH for that link.

You've made me a very happy bunny!

Not only did I find what I was looking for but a lot more to boot.
This will be an invaluable resource.
Thank you again.
Tan.

Hi  Frances,
I just wanted to check where you found this info.
The Chelmsford PR runs up to 1796 but ends in April and the next volume starts in 1797...
I can see the marriage in the IGI but if you have seen the original I wanted to check if Gowan could be a mistranscription of Gower as there are plenty of them in the PR & Census but no Gowan's whatsoever!
Thanks,
Tan

Aha...
If one letter can be mis-transcribed then I'm sure the other can too!
I shall have to search all variations and see what turns up.

Thank you.
