Do you have any idea where he went?  Or any other family members?  It's a very common name, and the US census only gives the country of birth if people were born outside the US, so the exact place of birth doesn't help.

Was he married to Rachel and did he have at least 8 children?  If so, he is listed in the 1881 and 1891 census and Rachel and his last child, Ethel, are listed in the 1901 census.  Rachel is a widow.  Looking at http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/  there is a James Herbert Young who dies in the June quarter of 1896 in Workingham, Berkshire/Wiltshire.

Hi Shellyesq and Genealiza
Taking over from Ken a bit – we’re looking for the same person!  Unfortunately Ken had a “senior moment” and mixed up the place and date of birth with his father another James William.

Shellyesq – James William Herbert YOUNG was born at Edinburgh Scotland in 1876 when his father was serving in the British Army.  Unfortunately the last sighting for him in England was in 1891 when he was staying with his grandparents in Dorset and shown as Herbert.  Sorry we have no idea where he went in the US or when but a family story says that it might have been with the Salvation Army.

Genealiza – You are right for James William snr, he was married to Rachel and died in 1896 (Berkshire), and his last child was certainly Ethel.  Can you tell us where you found her in 1901 please?

Many thanks for your interest.  Spiderboy.

Thanks for that Genealiza – had been told categorically that she’d moved her family back to Scotland, another myth I guess!

Spidey,  Family stories tend to be just that.  Glad to have helped in getting the story correct.---Genealiza
