Searching Carlisle Newspapers for suicide death
« on: Friday 01 June 07 23:18 BST (UK) »
I'd like to search for possible article on my Great Grandmas' death. She commited suicide not long after her husband had died in WW1 - Battle of Jutland.
Would it be more likely that the story is told twice, meaning once of her death and then again with the findings of a Coroners report?

I'm wondering if this is available at the Library and if it costs to search.
If it's not there then how can I do it, any advice welcome.

They didn't waste much time in holding inquests in those days.  One of my ancestors shot himself on the Wednesday, the inquest was held on the Thursday and was reported in Saturday's paper. That was in 1891.

You could try the Newspaper Library at Colingdale, see:

Sadly, I've no idea where it came from - someone sent it to me a couple of years ago.

That suicide was in Wigton.

Thanks Bob but I think the archives in The Cumberland News don't go back very far. I'd love to be wrong but I tried a search anyway and no 1916 came up just 2006.
I now know the date of the inquest so that will help.

Thanks Jim, do you know if I can get a printed copy of an article or would I have to write the details from the article?
