Presumably a Gym Master would have different apparatus to erect and maintain, for which he would need a labourer.

To me it indicates that he is a labourer but is only recently an ex gymnast he is only 20 and may have been hoping to continue with a gymnastic profession,
You can almost here him, or his mother proudly declaring
"he does  gymnastics, however he's doing a bit of labouring at the moment"

Hello ,
thought I might as well stick my two penorth in , :-\
Could it be a corruption locally of Gemester or gamester
meaning a gambler. Or even Gang master as in foreman.
What a pity you cant ask the enumerator !!!! :(

Just as well for some of these 19th century enumerators that we can't get our hands on them ... :o

Perhaps the 100 year rule is to protect the enumerators as much as the subjects!
