KING/CASTLE - Wantage area
« on: Monday 04 June 07 12:14 BST (UK) »
Can anybody tell me anything at all about the parents, siblings etc. of
Frederick Charles King  b. June quarter 1908 in the Wantage area, and his wife Isabel Castle,  I don't know anything at all about her, nor their wedding date.
All I know is that they had 3 children, Pansy, Daphne and Charles Frederick (b.1937).
I think Isabel died about 40 years ago at Long Wittenham, and Frederick died about
5-10 years ago(?), also at Long Wittenham.

Really hoping for some help !!

Foz,

Neither are shown in the BFHS Berkshire Burial Index 5th Edition, in Long Wittenham.

Hello Harry,
That's strange, I was shown their grave in Long Wittenham churchyard a few years ago by a member of their family !   Mind you, there was no headstone to prove it was them !
Thanks for your reply anyway.

Not that strange - the Berkshire Burial Index (5th Ed) only covers Long Wittenham from 1884-1979. It just means your couple probably both died after 1979.

Hi newburychap,

Thank you for replying, apparently Isabel died many years ago, maybe even around the
nineteen forties or fifties, so I thought she would have been mentioned somewhere.
I will have to try and get in contact with the relative who showed me their grave and see if he knows.  Can you find a birth or marriage for either of them please ?

Regards

I have recently spoken to a distant relative of Frederick King, he told me that he was born in
either Ginge or Lockinge in 1908, and died  in 1991 and is buried in Long Wittenham churchyard.
His wife was named Daisy Belle (Isabel?) Castle and she died in 1955 and is buried in
Long Wittenham churchyard, although not in the same grave !

Apparently Fredericks father worked on a farm on the Lockinge Estate.

Can anyone find any more details about any of them, and their families, from this bit of information please ?
Who owned the Lockinge Estate ?

Hi,   here's a bit more information that I've managed to find out.

Daisy Belle Castle was born at West Hendred on 29th April, may have been 1908/9, as she was 46 years old when she died on 11.2.1955.
Frederick King was born in 1908 at Lockinge Kiln, he had brothers whose names were
Frank, Walt, Bob and Les.  I think there were more siblings also, I don't know any of their dates.     At some time the King family lived at Betterton House ?   What, and where was Betterton House ?

Can anyone help with further info on these families please ?    :-* :-*

Who owned the Lockinge Estate ?
Lockinge Estate is and was owned by the Loyd family - Lord Wantage etc. It was immense (about 20,000 acres or a twentieth of Berkshire).  Almost half was sold in 1947 to pay death duties but they still have some 11,000 acres.
