Hiya

Arthur John Castle was baptised in West Hendred 5th August 1888 - along with sisters Agnes Christina and Victoria Eliza and brother Norman Miller Castle,  they are all just given as children of Jane Castle - no father named

However from the 1881 census he was born a bit earlier than that

from 1881 West Hendred

Jane Castle 38  born Wantage
Fanny Castle 15
William Castle 13
Edward Castle 9
James Castle 7
Robert Castle 6
Arthur Castle 2
Edmund Rivers 37

Although there is no father on the baptism - I think it will be the Edmund Rivers who is with the family in both the 1871 and 1881 census,  he is certainly named as father on the marriage record of Arthurs brother Robert.  Jane was married to Jacob Castle but by 1871 he was in an asylum.  It appears that her and Edmund lived as man and wife although they could not get married as Jacob was still alive.

That's an assumption that I've made as well.

Jane Davis married Jacob Castle on 3 May, 1963.
His parents were William Castle and Amy Roberts (married 27 June, 1824) whose children were James, Isaac, Emma, Jacob and Martha.
When William died, Amy married James Rivers, who already had a son Edmund.
When Jane's husband Jacob went missing (assumed into the asylum), she became the housekeeper for James and Edmund Rivers - presumably Amy had died.

I am descended from James Castle who, with brother Isaac and their wives (the Lewis sisters) came to Australia in 1857.

Hi there, I am new to this site and researching family history. If it is of interest to anyone I am related to this family. My Great Grandfather was Arthur John Castle from West Hendred. Many thanks

Hi White751.

Welcome!  I've just found your message - it's taken me 6 months!

Where does your family line come to from Arthur John Castle?
