What, and where was Betterton House ?

Betterton House is the big house in Betterton, a hamlet in East Lockinge once a manor (listed in the Domesday book) but now regarded as a deserted village.

Hi newburychap,

Thanks for the details you posted about Lockinge Estate, and the picture of Betterton House, it makes such a difference when one knows what a place looks like.
There's not much info coming up from any Rootschatters about the families I'm looking for,
so it seems I've hit a great BIG Brick Wall !!!!

Thank you once again for your help.

Hello Daisy,

Thanks so much for the info you sent.
I didn't think anyone out there was able to find anything, as I've not had much luck  in getting any details at all about any of these people.

Kind regards

Hi,

It looks like she might of used the middle name Belle instead of Isabel, this seems to be their marriage,

Daisy B CASTLE    JunQ 1936    Wantage    v.2c  p.947
Frederick C KING with same details.

If you get their birth certificates to find their parents I'm sure you will get help to go back from there  :)

Daisy

Hi - well done Daisy for finding the marriage entry.  Here are some bits I have found

From the Berks burial index
Long Wittenham
14th Feb 1955 Daisy Bell King aged 49 of 22 Didcot Road Long Wittenham

I checked the baptisms in West Hendred and although I didn't find Daisy Belle (there are other Castle baptisms around that time though)
I did find the baptsim

1908 June 21 Frederick Charles King s/o Frederick & Emily of Johnson's Farm,, carter born 21st May 1908

also from West Hendred born 23rd Sept 1910 Agnes Ellen d/o Frederick & Caroline Eleanor King of Ginge - lab
born 4th August 1912 William Alfred s/o Frederick & Caroline Emily King of Grove Road, Ginge - lab
born 20th Nov 1914 Robert Victor s/o Fred & Caroline King - lab
baptised 8th October (no birth date) Harold Walter s/o Fred & Caroline King of New Cottages - lab

In the 1901 census for Fawley (Berks) Frederick (aged 25 born W Brom Staffs)  & Caroline E King (aged 22 born Ardington Berks)
with their sons Albert E, aged 1 born Ardington Berks and Sydney V aged under 1 born Fawley

From the marriage registers for Ardington Berks
1896 October 12th
Frederick King aged 31 bach carter s/o Charles lab
to Caroline Emily Greenough aged 19 sp d/o Joseph lab
witnessed by George Greenough and Agnes King

So finally some bits which might help

Hi (again  :))

I just had a look a bit further in the Ardington transcripts and there are a few other entries concerning this family,  among them are 2 burials

1940 Jan 24th Frederick King of 77 Betterton aged 63

&

1951 April 4th Caroline Emily King of 77 Betterton Cottages aged 73

so it seems that they lived in Betterton Cottages (possibly esate worker cottages?)  not Betterton House - I hope this doesn't shatter your visions of granduer   :D   but it does seem to prove that we have the right King family with the connection to Betterton

Hmmmmmmmm don't breath too bigger sigh of relief  :)

As I had a little spare time, I thought I would try and find Frederick King (father of Frederick Charles) in some earlier census's and I can't find him at all.  He appears to be a bit random on his year of birth which doesn't help, the marriage transcript in 1896 clearly says 31,  the 1901 census says 25 and his age of death in 1940 is 63,  but I have tried for over an hour and I can't find a Frederick King son of a Charles born in the midlands on any earlier census
