On the 1881 Census I have a James Henry HOLGATE b.20.7.1880, Southport, LAN resident with grandparents Joseph STRETTON & Ellen WOOLERTON in Clay Cross, DBY.

James' birth cert. records his parents as William HOLGATE, contractor's foreman, & Emma HOLGATE, formerly WOOLLATON.

 ???Joseph & Ellen had a daughter Emma STRETTON b.1850 LEI.  could she be the mother?

Can't seem to find her or William HOLGATE on the 1881 Census.  Can anyone help

From the 1851 census, it seems Emma was born before Joseph and Ellen's marriage - she's a Wooloton, age 1, b. Whitwick
HO107/2084; Folio 782? 24

but I can't see Joseph and Ellen's marriage to confirm

many thanks.  so Emma was born out of wedlock and took her mother's maiden name?  I checked my records out and...
