How would you be able to get hold of South Australian birth, deaths and marriages indexes?

If you are interested in buying any of them, you can do so through the South Australian Genealogy and Heraldy Society. You can find more information on their website .... www.saghs.org.au/

Sorry - no. Only through SAGHS at their library in Unley, South Australia, other libraries that have the Indexes in Australia, and from the published indexes on CDs, books or microfiche.

think that there may be an added factor to not being able to find information. When Florence died in 1941 after childbirth, she was Catholic and her husband, Arthur was not. In her will she expressly stated that her children be put in an orphanage and become wards of the state because Arthur was not Catholic and "could not look after the children". I don't know if that stops you from finding information, because with the whole adoption privacy thing]

were the children put into homes? didn't arthur have any rights as the father?

Hi

I have re-read the post and wondering what info you are looking for -

I think you may want details of Arthur's and Florence Bridget's marriage as you aren't aware of her surname.

MARRIAGE

PANNELL Arthur 33 S  7 Jul 1937  Father George PANNELL
=
McCABE Florence Bridget  28 S   Father John Joseph McCABE
at Catholic Presbytery, Murray Bridge  Ref: Pin 328/54

Now this is a bit interesting

PANNELL  Frank Edward 32 S 12 Dec 1927 Father George PANNELL
=
McCABE  Elizabeth May 26 S  Father John Joseph McCABE
at St Pauls Presbytery, Mount Gambier   Ref  Gre 313/874

Two brothers married two sisters.

Arthur's sisters' marriages

PANNELL
  Florence 27 S 10 Feb 1920  Father George PANNELL
=
CAIN William Anthony 25 S Father Alfred John CAIN
at St Pauls Church, Mount Gambier   Ref  Gre 282/420

PANNELL Johanna May 24 S 2 Jan 1926  Father George PANNELL
=
PATTERSON Charles Stewart 29 S  Father James PATTERSON
at St Andrews Presbyterian Church, Penola  Ref Gre 304/19

Are you aware that births are only available to 1928, marriages to 1937 and deaths to 1972.  Now bearing that in mind what other lookups can we do for you?

We can often track deaths through burial records that are available online on various sites.

Hope this info is of some help.

Cheers for now
Cando

Hi

Heres a bit more from

http://www.saghs.org.au

Surname: PANNELL, Frank Edward. Personal Notice in Advertiser 1982.

There are a number of Pannell's on the death and burial indexes on this site.  Your step father may recognise some of the names.

Cheers
Cando

Golly gosh, thanks!  ;D

Arthur had no rights to looking after the children. He would often go to the orphanage trying to catch a glimpse of them but was denied access. After many years of searching he found two sons, George and Brian. Recently another sister was found, Claire, she lives in England with her husband and son. Another daughter died in 1964 of a car accident, I cannot remember the name. Florence, gave birth to a boy called Denis before she died but he was adopted as a baby. The other children grew up in the orphanage, Denis was the only child adopted out. If I remember rightly there was also another sister.

I appreciate your offer Cando. I was wondering if you could access any records relating to the father of George, James and his mother. For example: Births, marriages, deaths or if he immigrated to Australia and when. Also if there is more information on Annie's parents, Frederick etc.

All of you in this forum have really helped to fill in a blank in my stepfather's side of the family. My stepfather is extremely happy with the information. Thanks for all your generous help! :)
