Hi Ann

Thanks for explaining the areas, the Barony area has always had me baffled.

As you might realise, I have been going through these quite quickly, and it is getting late!, but still nobody has come up as born in Nitshill.  Nonetheless, SDGW does not necessarily give the birthplace.  It might only state where a man enlisted which can be annoying but I suppose it is what the man 'gave out'  or volunteered to the recruiter, when he enlisted or was 'called up'.

So! I thought the William Orr rellie was going to be more promising for you.  However, now that you seem definite about Nitshill area, I am no longer hopeful.  Still, just incase here is a couple from the Renfrewshire area:

William Orr, Pte 1392, 1st (Royal) Dragoons died 12/11/1914 so would only have been 14 years old
on Panel 5 at Ypres. He was born Greenock, Renfrewshire.

William Orr, (born Glasgow, enlisted Glasgow, residence Greenock).
Pte 3944, 3rd (Reserve) Bn HLI
Died 10/06/1915. It states he died at home, but that could mean in Scotland as he is buried at Comely Bank, Edinburgh amongst the military graves.

There is also a William Orr of Newton Mearns, and another from Bridgeton and yet another from Milngavie. But, not exactly what you are looking for!  ???  The latter was aged 32 when killed, so can rule him out, but very often the age is not mentioned.

Hi mmm

yes is definitely James. He is named after his grandfather. He was definietly born in Nitshill. I have his birth cert in front of me.

His father was John

Hi Atom

The Nitshill bit is abosultely 100% correct. I have the birth certs.

is unlike;ly that someone from Nitshill would have enlisted in Barony. More likely to have been Barrhead or Paisley as they are much nearer and more accessible.

I diud find two James Connollys at GROS on the Minor Death records but because other details were missing and ages didn't match discounted them. Tho as I have said he could have lied about his age.

Hey ho

 :)

Well Ann,  that was a result with Robert, if even a very small one. There were only two McGovans mentioned, the other was from Aberdare, Glamorganshire.  So sorry to sound like a broken record but are you sure your John died?  Cos there are some here on the MICs:

Yep Ann

It is frustrating, there is nothing showing up for Nitshill! and only Robert Hart McGovan for Paisley.  It must be a slog for you.

Hopefully, someone on here will come up trumps for you soon.

Theres this link above also theres a scottish war memorials discussion forum ive looked on their site and the lads arent named on the Nitshill memorial.

Heres another idea have you looked at Royal Navy or Merchant Navy?
i had a quick look on the NA Royal Navy records online theres definately a William Orr from Renfrew and a John McGavin listed Dates of birth dont match but as you say they may have lied.

Hi ady

I hadn't tried the Navy yet mainly cos I assumed like rest of family they'd gone into the army but I will definetly have a look. James Connolly could well be on the memorial in Neilston which must admit hadn't thought of looking at. This is because his parents moved there at some point but I don't know when exactly. His father was station master there.

Thanks for all your help.

dont rely on the enlistment area to much, the man could have been working or visiting the area that he enlisted in,as an example,a large number of men who enlisted in the manchester [pals] regts had their enlistment papers delivered to their workplace, they were filled in and returned by messenger boy, some of these men lived as far away as northwich, crewe, wales, etc,but on their enlistment papers it states,MANCHESTER,mack
military history,mainly ww1,manchester pals battalions,tyneside irish +tyneside scottish brigades,leeds,liverpool,accrington,birmingham,hull,barnsley,swansea and salford pals.
