Help on my G Grandfathers missing years!

New to Roots chat, but not genealogy.  My G Gfather was Joseph Thomas Lawes born 1872 Bristol - no problems.
1881 census - no problems. 1991 census - no trace. 1901 census - no trace.  The family moved to London (head Henry Stephen Lawes) and all his siblings can be found. He married Helen Louise Young however there is no match in the marriage registers. My G/father Joseph Thomas Jnr was born in Wandworth Jan 1899 (birth cert) , however he does not appear in the 1901 census either! My Gfathers address at birth is given as 49 Lydhurst Avenue, Streatham, London.  Does anybody have any ideas as to where they could be found or things I could try?  Any help or suggestions would be grateful so that I can get on with my G Gmothers side of my tree - DJ

Hello

I see the 1881 census has Josephs birth as Stapleton Gloucestershire age 8.

Seems the 1891 census is correct.

Ref pawnbroker - that could be him - he went into the furniture buisness with his sons later in life - also links with suffolk - thanks will look this up.  Ref Lawes tree from 2001 - it might have been my own tree that was posted about then, but worth looking into - many thanks for the posts
