Sue, further research shows I had incorrect parents for Jane Overend. Isabel Overend's parents were Thomas Overend and Mary Sanderson, Jane's John Overend & Elizabeth Parker. John Overend was born in Lancaster, Lancashire, and as far as I can work out, John & Elizabeth actually had 6 children, possibly 7. Back to the drawing board.

...and this may be of interest. Charles Overend Garbutt's wife Lucy Watson was his first Cousin. Lucy Watson was the daughter of John Watson, a Civil Engineer, and Elizabeth Overend, Jane Overend's sister...

It was really interesting how they found partners in "the old days" Brothers married their widowed sisters-in-laws, brothers and sisters from one family married brothers and sisters in another family. My family tree is a really interesting cross over or web of interesting relationships.

My grandmother would take me for cemetery walks, which I hated as a small child but now those names all make sense and the reason they were buried together fits like pieces of a jigsaw.

Charles Overend Garbutt is in my line.  His oldest son married Annie Ethel Hides.  Their oldest daughter Alice Mary Heatley was my grandmother.

I'd really like to find out more about Charles Overend Garbutt's father and his line.  I know his father Thomas Edward Garbutt born in Danby in 1823 and died in Stockton in 1861.  He was an iron merchant.  He married Jane Overend in 1847 and they had a daughter who died in infancy and then three sons.  14 years later, in 1861, Thomas Edward Garbutt died.

Can anyone help me with information about his forebears?
Thanks so much
Louise

Hi Louise,
I am related to Annie Ethel Hides side of the family if you want any information on that line. Her mother was my great grandfather’s half brother a very sad and interesting story of their lives. If you want to message me I’d love to give you the information.
Cheers.
