Bath marriage records- GRAY / GOODRIDGE
« on: Sunday 10 June 07 13:08 BST (UK) »
I would be grateful if anyone with access to Bath marriage records could provide any more details (father's names etc) on marriage of William Gover Gray and Eliza Goodridge. I do know that this took place at St Mary's Bathwick on 13 February 1836 but would appreciate any additional information. Thanks

Hi

Fathers names did not appear on marriage entries until 1.7.1837 when civil registration was introduced

However - this entry is on the IGI

WILLIAM GOVER GRAY  Birth:  28 SEP 1812   Christening:  19 SEP 1813   Argyle Independent, Bath, Somerset

Father:  JOHN GRAY     Mother:  JANE GOVER

JOHN GRAY   Spouse:  JANE GOVER    Marriage:  07 DEC 1805   Saint Thomas, Winchester, Hampshire

I also found these entries on the IGI

RICHARD GRAY  Birth:  01 MAY 1810   Christening:  09 JUN 1811   Argyle Independent  Bath Somerset

Father:  JOHN GRAY     Mother:  JANE

WILLIAM GRAY  Birth:  17 SEP 1807    Christening:  09 JUN 1811   Argyle Independent Bath Somerset
Father:  JOHN GRAY     Mother:  JANE

I suspect that this William died before 1812 - it was a very common practice to call children after their deceased siblings

Can't find anything for Eliza

Hi CaroleW
Thank you so much for the information. I think it seems fairly safe to treat Richard 1810 & William 1807 as the sons of John & Jane (married 1805). I imagine that I'll have to go to Bath to search for Argyle Independent records for any more information? Strange that they waited until 1811 to have both of them christened, but as you suspected, perhaps William was ailing and it had something to do with that.

Hi

As the marriage was in Hampshire, I did wonder whether possibly William the first was born in Hampshire rather than Somerset but it would be very difficult to find out

Hello Mike
Thanks for all the information.
I did know parts of what you kindly provided, but am very grateful for the 'additional' things, especially the 'death before' date for Henry Goodridge from his daughter Eliza's marriage announcement, I have been trying for years to find him and now have a much better idea of his life span.

In case you haven't found it, this would appear to be Eliza Goodridge's baptism

http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/SearchResults.pl?RecordType=Baptisms&RecordID=7150394

and this her parents' wedding

http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/SearchResults.pl?RecordType=Marriages&RecordID=2043347

The marriage of the other daughter gives Henry's occupation: Iron Monger
