1881 census help
« on: Sunday 10 June 07 19:58 BST (UK) »
Hi

Can't seem to find my Great Gran on the 1881 census, so wondered if any detectives out there could help?

Great Gran was Elizabeth ALLISON, born 1877/8 according to her marriage cert in 1896 which states she was 19, her father was John ALLISON.

1891 census:  RG12/4093/27/20:

John ALLISON, Head, M. 40, Coal Miner b. Durham, Blaydon
Sarah ALLISON, wife, M. 40 b. Durham, Pittington
Mary Ann ALLISON, daur. 15, b. Northumberland, Backworth
Susannah ALLISON, daur. 15, b.           ditto
Elizabeth A. ALLISON, daur, 13 b. Durham, Willington
John W. ALLISON, son, 6, scholar, b. NBL, Killingworth
James R ALLISON, son, 3, b. NBL, Killingworth.

I just can't seem to find any of the family anywhere in 1881.

Thanks for reading this.

Trini.

This one seems too coincidental not too look into

Commercial Street, Willington, Durham
John Allinson Head M 61 Coke Drawer Durham Middleton
Isabella Wife M 45 Westmoreland Warcoss
John son 14 Labourer " Brough
Mary daur 11 Scholar " "
George W son 5 Durham Willington
Isabella J daur 3      "      "
Elizabeth A daur 1  Durham Willington
 RG11; Piece: 4959; Folio: 15; Page: 27

Let's just say I don't really believe John's age.

Sorry for casting nasturshons ;) his age is accurate, found them in 1871 with his his birthplace Durham Middleton Teasdale.  His occupation then is W.M. Local Preacher, Labourer, so I expect this is not them, although Elizabeth E does seem coincidental.

i'm geussing the 1881 census MaryA found was Elizabeth Alice Allison.

how about the Elizabeth Allison listed as granddaughter:
RG11 4893 32 7
Elizabeth Allison age 3 b. Greatham Durham (abt 1878) address Long Newton
household members
John Whitehead age 59 Head Farm Labourer
Elizabeth Whitehead 60 wife
John Newby 46 brother (brother of whom?) Farm Servant

I think from looking at the census that Elizabeth Ann b.1877 father was James & mother was Catherine
(RG11 4694 32 15)

Maybe a birth certificate would help to identify Sarah's maiden name

Susannah and Mary Ann are twins

Thank you to everyone who has replied to this posting so far!  You're all great!

I'm looking at this family for one reason........my elderly uncle remembered his Grandma having a brother Ernest, a sister Hannah, and at least '2 other sisters'.

That's when I found the 1901 census info with an 'Ernest', and then I found the same family in 1891.

My GreatGrandma's marriage cert states that she was living at 38 Cannon Street, Newcastle (which was in the Scotswood Road area), in the parish of St Aidan.  Her Dad, John, on 14/11/1896 was listed as a Machine Man and one of her witnesses was a James Edward ALLISON!

Although the 1901 census has my Great Gran, Elizabeth Alice WALTON as being born in Winlaton, the 1891, has her born in Willington.

Such a puzzle!

Trini.

Trini,

("to be sure, to be sure ! " said Mick the Irishman )

Do you know that your grandmother was Elizabeth Alice ?

And that she married William Walton @ St Aidan's ?

The John/Sarah Allison family, yes included an Ernest, but no record of a Hannah, but no record of that John been a machine man ( Coal miner, coal miner, general labourer)but no John Edward Allison

( C1901 John/Sarah have two son Johns, but second one should read James Robert ! )

A birth in Winlaton would have been registered at Gateshead Reg District, one at Willington would have been registered at Durham (city) Reg District.

June 1878 Elizabeth Alice Allison reg at Durham.

June 1879 Elizabeth Allison reg at Gateshead.

What was name of other witness at your gg/ma's marriage ?
