Kemp family - Dundee, need info & advice please
« on: Monday 11 June 07 19:32 BST (UK) »
Hello people,

I've discovered Isabella Kemp (nee Ogg ), widower of Alexander Kemp, moved to Dundee after his death in1875 with her daughter Mary.
In 1881 census are living at 153 Overgate.
In 1891 census are living at 57 Scouring ? Burn.
She died in 1924 aged 82 at 12 King Street in Dundee.

Would Scouring Burn be correct ?
Was this address at King St a Hospital ? can't find any information.
How would I find out if she was buried and where ?
How would I find out if there was a death notice ?

Alexander died at 14 Murraygate in Dundee.
Can I ask the same questions for him.

Many Thanks

Gordon

HI Gordon,   a few answers which might help you.

Would Scouring Burn be correct ?
Yes.  Scouring Burn was an area going West out of Dundee. You could possibly find it on an old map.

Was this address at King St a Hospital ? can't find any information.
No, its a street going North East out of Dundee.

How would I find out if she was buried and where ?
You could contact Dundee City Council, giving date of death and ask them to check for you.  Not sure if there is a charge for this.

How would I find out if there was a death notice ?
You could email  The Courier, Dundee, asking them if they could help you.  But I am not sure if there were many death notices in those days.  Lack of money I would expect.

Alexander died at 14 Murraygate in Dundee.
This is also a street.   Still there in the centre of Dundee.
Can I ask the same questions for him.

If you go to www.dundeecity.gov.uk - local history, and to Photopolis, you will find photographs of old Dundee.  Might give you an insight as to what it used to look like.   Youy mention the Overgate.  This has all but gone and now has a shopping centre built there.  You will get a photograph of this in Photopolis somewhere.

Hi Gordon,

Yes the Scouring Burn is quite correct in fact my grandmother lived there and my father growing up.  It was a very well known area in Dundee.

I have a photograph of (the high land built in the 1860 by a Mr Robertson) that was part of the Scouring burn it was nine stories high, I have the webs address where you can see a picture and also information on the building and the gentleman who built it, just click on Link below which takes you to the picture:-

Hi again Gordon,

King Street is still in Dundee, it is at the end of Princes Street although it has changed a bit since those days.  There was Baxters Jute mill there and although the mill closed in the late 1960's I think? the building is still there, many people who lived in this area worked in Baxters Jute mill.

Hello dorothy and Elizabeth

Thanks for the replies and links.
These should certainly help in building picture of what things were like
    for them in these times.
Isabella was working as Jute Spinner and Mary as a Jute Weaver,
so probably worked at Baxters I would imagine

Thanks Again

Gordon
