Just found your thread through a message sent from Kris. This is all such fabulous info. Our branch of the family descends through Esther Day Wilson's brother Peter Day Wilson. His son Henry (3 Jun 1833) was also a Master Mariner/Shipowner and married Mary Carter (chr 26 Aug 1834) who was the daughter of Thomas Carter, shipwright. They had 8 children (one died as an infant, Mary Alice) and lived in Padstow until they relocated to Essex prior to emigrating to Canada in the 1880's. Their oldest child, Harry Arthur Wilson (born at sea), stayed in England and was a stationer. I've been trying to track the Kunze's back to Altona, Denmark, but it's a little tricky as Altona was essentially a suburb of Hamburg under Danish rule until 1864. Probably why Margaretta lists her birthplace as Hamburg, Germany on census records. I believe the headstone inscription in the Padstow churchyard is for Margaretta Christiana Kunze's parents and brother. Still need to prove that, however. Everything posted so far agrees completely with what I've got in my records, included the identity of the mysterious "Polly."

Anyway, Henry's branch of the family came to Saskatchewan, Canada and homesteaded to spread out over much of the western provinces. Interested to hear how everyone else links up.

Still not sure where George Wilson (Martha Day's husband) came to be in Cornwall. There is a Wilson branch of mariners from Scotland that could link up somehow, but that too needs corroboration. Anxious to hear from anyone else.

It's actually a very clear picture, considering.

Hi

Many thanks to Kris & Deb USA  for all their hard work here and also to Debco for making contact and supplying so much info.  I had no idea that my posting would result in so much detailed information being provided.

My reason for trying to find out more about Esther Day Wilson is because she was the grandmother of Capt Robert Falcon Scott, the famous explorer.

We have an old family story that my gt grandmother,  Mary Elizabeth Hammond, was related to Scott - possibly a cousin of his mother.  When I tried to prove this link I found that nobody appeared to have really traced Scott's ancestry properly and decided to find out what I could.

I had asked in another posting on this site whether anyone is interested in Capt. Scott and whether they could assist me in looking at Mary Elizabeth Hammond's possible link to him.  She was born in Dublin in 1868, the daughter of Thomas Hammond and Agnes Templeton.  I have been unable to trace their marriage and as many of the census records appear not to have survived I cannot even say when or where they were born.   Obviously this does not make the task any easier!!!

I had hoped that by tackling things in a 'back to front' way i.e. tracing Scott's ancestry that I might stumble my way back to an Irish connection.

So far, however, I have not found any Irish links in Capt Scott's direct lines, although I have heard stories that some of his family did originate there.  Scott's wife, Edith Bruce, certainly had Irish ancestry, so I am beginning to wonder whether the connection might in fact lie with her.

Thanks again to all who have helped so far.

Hopefully the mystery will be solved eventually.
