Can anyone tell me what this census says for birthplace?
« on: Monday 11 June 07 21:36 BST (UK) »
1851 census, Shoreditch, Middlesex: HO107/1537/53 p27

I'm afraid I can't work out what the place of birth for Samuel DORRINGTON is - Worting? Working? Norting?  Can't find any of them on the map.

Can anyone with better knowledge of Herts villages than me tell me what it says?

(His wife, Mary COLLIS is the sister of my great x3 grandfather Daniel COLLIS - their father William is staying with the Dorringtons at the time of the 1851 census.)

Thanks very much indeed.

Yes, you're absolutely right Kerry - I'm onto that as soon as I've recorded all the information on the 1851.  I just thought someone might "know" what it was supposed to say!

The Collis clan are from Thundridge, Herts.

Edited to say that I can't find him on a later census.  The IGI record mentioned below suggests some of them went to Australia.  The Dorringtons are a little tangential, so I don't think I can be bothered trying to teach myself Australian records.

Not for the moment anyway ...

It's probably another one of those Enumerator errors!

Crozier I thought Woking but wrong county, isn't it Surrey?

There's a Samuel Dorrington, b. 1818 at Watton at Stone, Herts on the IGI but it looks nothing like that  :-\

You might be onto something there.  They sound similar, don't they?  Watton, Worting (especially if you adopt a comedy yokel accent ;D)
