Finlan
« on: Wednesday 13 June 07 13:28 BST (UK) »
Please can anyone help me find some Finlans in Co Mayo?

I think they may have come from the Townland of Cuilmore.

The person I am really looking for is Patrick Finlan born about 1826.

My problem is I only have him on the English censuses from 1861 onwards  and all it says for place of birth is Ireland.

Help of any kind would be much appreciated as I cannot find anyone else researching this name.

Thankyou

Janet

Hi Janet,

Griffiths Valuation was conducted in Mayo 1856-57 and shows two Finlans Thomas and Patrick living in Cuilmore in the parish of Kilconduff. Both had the same landlord, Roger McCarrick.

The 1901 census shows two Finlan households still living in the townland.

You can look up Griffiths on www.failteromhat.com and the 1901 census on www.leitrim-roscommon.com

Jan,

What gave you the lead to Cuilmore in Mayo?

I know it sounds daft but I found who I thought could have been Pats brother in law in a census in Wolverhampton and it said Mayo for place of birth so I looked for Finlans in Mayo and then found those 2 on the 1901 Mayo census.  Patricks wife was called Bridget Maddon..

I know I am on dodgy ground here. bbut trying to unravel this is like doing a jigsaw without a picture.

Jan,

You may already know that there was an Anthony Madden (with an E) living in the same parish of Kilconduff.

Hi Jan,
googling 'Kilconduff' or Finlan brings up a couple of sites with some info from the parish e.g. 1822 marriages but not baptisms around 1826. However, this site, http://www.from-ireland.net/parishrecords/mayo/mayorcindex.htm does seem to indicate that there are records available on film but strongly warns that they may be illegible  :(
Have a browse around and see what turns up.
best wishes
