Thanks to your advice I have traced the Finlands back to Swinford in Mayo and am now at 1798.

I have also found a living connection in Ireland who is the only Finlan living in that county.

You are all stars!!

A trip may be in order for some one soon

Ronnie G.  I find that response totally insincere.  Try looking for records for Attymass, Corrower & Carrick (Ballina, Mayo the registration district).  I have made 2 trips of 10 days each to the area in the last 12 months.  Spent a fortune at North Mayo Heritage Centre - 30 Euros for a search -nothing.   'Combed' 8 grave yards in the immediate area using an Ordnance Survey map - nothing.  Cannot find marriage or death certificates for the family in question - not even birth certificates for their sons.  I have written (snailmail) to every family member in the phone book (with stamped addressed envelopes) - no replies.  Have viewed over 50 pieces of film from the LDS - nothing.  Have requested numerous copies of BMD's from Roscommon in the hope that one of them is ours - nothing. It's like this family is a figurement of my imagination.  So, please don't tell me it's impossible.  I have left no stone unturned.  Not even the church has records.

Maybe I got lucky Dee because the name Finlan is pretty rare.

I am sorry that you have had no luck with your search.

Dee,

Of course my response was insincere - it was my feeble attempt at humour and I am sorry if it rankles with you.

Irish family research is very difficult (compared to Great Britain) and is only really feasible if you live here and can do the foot slogging yourself or are prepared to pay for someone else to do it for you.

Jan was lucky to make such quick progress and I myself have been lucky more than once, but I had to work pretty hard to get in the right position to take advantage of that luck and I have no doubt Jan did too.

If it were not for the wonderful resource and community of Rootschat I would be struggling still in many areas of my research (Thank you again Valda and Little Nell).

All the best in your search Dee - you will get lucky eventually - you deserve it and you'll be ready for it.

Well Jan someone will have a try to help that's for sure.

Dee- you know that even in RonnieG's humour there is a grain of truth because you, yourself, help people and find missing ancestors or at least links.
It is hard for Irish records but - oh what a thrill- to find at least a glimmer. I do hope you strike lucky.
I wrote to Mayo Heritage a good few years ago with what I knew and they charged me the going rate of the time to reiterate my info! So kind of them.
I still call in the shop there to buy something if I'm passing  :-\
I take it your birth certificate requests are after 1865?
My own family parish records have pages missing so whole groups of years are not there - it is frustrating I know.
take care - all of you
Kath
