This could very well be the same family as Sarah and Samuel marry in 1828 in Kidderminster so it would fit and there is a daughter called Ann born around this time according to later census records.

Thanks
Karen

Hi Karen,
No I never did find out why the family interchanged the names Beswick and Poultney.................so if anyone out there has any ideas or suggestions I'd be really pleased!
I haven't looked at this family for a while, so need to get my notes out and find out where I've got to. I'm a bit tied up this weekend as we're painting my daughters bedroom as a surprise while she's away, at least I hope it will be a surprise!
I'll look the file out and let you know what I've got ASAP.

It's strange that isn't it? May be we could think of something sinister and it will be very simple! Anyway whenever you are ready - no problem. I have my information on a word document - not sure if you can post on here but if you pm your email address I can send it.

Hope the surprise goes down well - have a good weekend.
Best wishes
Karen

Hi Karen,
I've had a look at my notes and have come up with the following:

1. Re Change of name. In the 1841 and 1851 census they were Beswick. In 1861 they were Poultney and in 1871 were back to Beswick. I did wonder if something had happened around 1861, but then looked at the children born approx 1830-1863 and they are a combination of Poultney, Beswick and in the case of my Sarah, Beswick Poultney together. So both names were in use before 1861.

2.Looking at Samuel's place of birth on the census, I see the only time Manchester is stated is 1861 (again!) the other census state Worcs. So I guess Manchester was mis transcribed, or just written down wrong. Unless of course something happened around 1861!!!!

3.I also note in 1871 Samuel and Sarah live at different addresses, same road, different house numbers. Samuel is with daughter Ada Beswick. I wonder what that was all about?

I will PM you with my e mail address.

This happened in my family, it made it a right bu***r to find them but rootchatters managed (as usual  ;D)

My William starts off in census as Cambridge, marries, changes to Love, then back to Cambridge. With further investigation I think he was illegitimate, mum then married, he took stepfathers name then went back to mums maiden name after he married and then stepdads name again.  I have no idea why tho'  ;D

Hi Madpants,
Thanks for your message. I'm so sorry it's taken me so long to reply, I haven't been on Roots for months (as you can tell). I live in hope that I will sort this family out one day. It can be very frustrating, but so much fun when it unravels itself!
