Whilst researching the Rees family, I came across John and Elizabeth C (Clara) staying with their Uncle - Thomas Pitt.  Research further into Thomas makes it look like his name may have been transcribed into Pill - which looks like the same transcription on Sarah's; John and Elizabeth's mother's wedding certificate but only her dad John's name has been transcribed this way.

So I would be very interested in finding out who had offered this alternative name and whether or not this is the same Thomas.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Tigces

Huh?

Sorry, I cant follow what you are saying!  Are you looking at online records?  Is that where the "transcription" change comes in?

Hoping to help

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Thomas seems to remain consistently a Pitt in the main records

1841 census HO107 358/7 folio 10
Hawkesbury Gloucestershire
John Pitt 81 born Gloucestershire Ag lab
Mary Pitt 76 born Gloucestershire
Thomas Pitt 35 born Gloucestershire Ag lab
Prudence Pitt 10 born Gloucestershire
Ruth Pitt 8 born Gloucestershire
Charles Pitt 27 born Gloucestershire Ag lab
Eliza Pitt 30 not born Gloucestershire
Wm Pitt 6 weeks born Gloucestershire

Thomas is written on the 1851 and 1861 censuses as Pitt and transcribed in the census indexes as Pitt - both times living in Hawkesbury (wrong age transcribed on the 1851 census but then there is a big ink splodge just over his age)

This is his possible death registration though the age isn't quite right.

Deaths Mar 1880
Pitt  Thomas  80  Chipping S.  6a 14*

So on baptism, census and death registration Thomas is consistently written as Pitt either in transcription or in the actual records (census). There is no evidence either that Thomas strayed very far from Hawkesbury in his life, so it should not be difficult to confirm or eliminate him as the Thomas Pill you have found in another record or researcher's tree?

Regards

Valda

Found it, on the census RG10/2929; Folio: 138; Page: 13; it doesn't look like it's the same Thomas as he is down as being born in Bromyard Heredfordshire England.

Thanks for the all the other information .  Oh one other cry for help ... this didn't appear in my e-mails, I checked the spam folder as well anyone know what I need to alter?

Hi again

(Well done Valda - as ever!  :D )

Tigces you need to check your Profile to make sure you haven;t altered the Notifications setting - default it that you DO get notifications.

It could also be that your mail server is a bit slow today?

;)
