Matson - Oliver and Hardy - Gibson
« on: Sunday 17 June 07 17:29 BST (UK) »
Hi
I'm trying to trace some Irish roots, but I'm not geting very far.

William MATSON and Eliza OLIVER were married in Barony Parish in Glasgow in 1834, but none of their children appear to have been born in Scotland. The Parish entry says that they are residing in Barony, but gives no further info, other than that William was a weaver.

From the 1841 census it appears that they are both from Ireland. William now is a shoemaker, born about 1810 and Eliza is 3 years younger.
In 1841 they are living in Buchanan Street in Glasgow with 3 children, Mary 5 and John 3 born in Ireland and William 1 born in Glasgow. They don't appear on the later census records and it seems that they returned to Ireland.

William MATSON had died by 1872 (recorded on marriage certificate of their son Thomas) but Eliza was still alive then, presumably still living in Ireland. She doesn’t appear on any Scottish Census after 1841.

Their son John MATSON married Maria Jane HARDY 25 April 1865 in Belfast. Maria Jane is the daughter of Thomas HARDY, an Innkeeper and Jane GIBSON - info taken from her death records in Scotland.  Maria Jane is born about 1841 in Ireland.

On the Scottish death certificate of John Matson it states that he was a shoe maker, as well as an army pensioner. He died in the Great Hamilton Army Lodging House and the cause of death was a compound fracture of the leg and gangrene as well as 1 month of debility.

Where on earth would I start looking for more info on these families?

Since civil registration of Irish births (& deaths & Catholic marriages) only began in 1864 you will have a problem finding their Irish roots without known where they were from. You will probably need to go through all the Scottish records in the hope that place of birth, parents names, etc. are recorded.

William MATSON had died by 1872 (recorded on marriage certificate of their son Thomas) but Eliza was still alive then, presumably still living in Ireland. She doesn’t appear on any Scottish Census after 1841.
If you could get death certificates for William and Eliza there might be some clues.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thomas Hardy who was the publican or innkeeper at 20, Bank Lane may have been the same Thomas Hardy with the business at 35-37, High St. The 1852 Directory shows that the business in High Street was that of haberdasher, hosier, silk mercer and woollen draper. There's no listing for the publican in the 1852 Directory.

Hi Aghadowey, Anthony, Christopher and Maryderry,

thank you all for your help, at least I know a little bit more now.

I wouldn't know where to find the deathc certificates for any of the 4, because I don't know when or where they died. The Scottish records don't offer any more clues.

But perhaps I'll be able to find out more with the info you guys have given me.

Much appreciated

Hi Maryderry

Thanks again for your help. The year is correct, it differs from1865 and 1864 on the Scottish documents.

was that marriage in a Catholic or protestant Church, do you know? Where did you find that information? I was just wondering if I would be able to find William and Eliza there as well.

Thanks Aghadowey

on IGI I found a birth for a Thomas Hardy and Jane Gibson atound 1806 in Carnmoney, Antrim, is that anywhere near Belfast?

Is it likely that these are the right people?

I know I'm sounding stupid, but I'm trying to understand the lay out etc.

The Matsons where all shoemakers, was that a common profession in those days?
