Hi irret

To open a gedcom file you must have a family history programme - such as Reunion or Legacy if you're using a Mac.  You open your family history programme and click 'import' and then choose your file (gedcome) to import.

Hope this helps

Hi Jaylay,
Thanks for the speedy response! RE Reunion or Legacy are they expensive?

I use Reunion 9 - I think it's brilliant - very easy to use and flexible.  I got my copy in New York, it cost $99, but you can buy it on their website - www.leisterpro.com.  I know it's expensive, but their customer service is second to none - they have a forum (similar to Rootschat) on the website and you can get an answer to any problem very quickly.  I'm afraid I don't know anything about Legacy, other than it's a Mac genealogy programme.

No problem irret - and if you do buy it feel free to PM me with any queries on it - I've only been using it for about 18 months but I love it!

I guess GR sent you the GEDCOM as an email attachment.

You do not need to buy a program to read a GEDCOM file.  You can get PAF (Personal Ancestry File) from the LDS.

http://www.familysearch.org/

Scroll down to the yellow area at the bottom right hand side and click on:

Download PAF

When you have downaloaded and installed the program click on File and then Import and specify the location and file you got from GR.

Ah, but does PAF (Personal Ancestry File) run on a Macintosh? I don't think it does.

Irret, there is a free family history program for the Mac, but it is very basic, no-frills and text only. Still, it should let you see what you've got in your .ged file.

http://www.dcs.qmul.ac.uk/~keithc/family-history/see-gedcom/

There is a link at the bottom of the page to Downloads, and once there, choose the top one: Version 0.8.

Good luck!   :)

Hi Koromo,
Yes you were right about the LDS it's not for MACs and I have successfully downloaded your link if that is the correct term and for the first time can view my tree in amazing colour but have tried to print off and I think I have to register not too sure but can't find where and would I have to pay.?
I must thank you it is so exciting to see, popped a disk in to burn off family tree - never done it before but said I need to register so any help or advice would be appreciated.
