POLLARD & WORMELL in Edmondthorpe

Morning, all

My 2 x g grandparents were John Pollard & Charlotte Wormell (various spelling).  I have been able to identify John's ancestors but not Charlotte's.  I purchased their marriage certificate but for both of them it says deceased for father's name.

On the 1841 census Charlotte is shown with a small child called Elizabeth who died shortly afterward.  There are 3 possibilities with this child - she was John's; Charlotte had been married previously or the child's father was not known.  John is shown on the 1841 census with 2 sons from a previous marriage, which I believe to be to a Mary.

I would like help to take Charlotte futher back and also discover the full name of John's first wife.  I have looked on the IGI but have found nothing.

What are John's and Charlotte's ages on marriage cert?  also, can you be sure John was married previously?   Does the cert give his 'condition' as widow?

At work at the moment but ages just given as full and cannot remember marital status - will need to look when I get in.  I've had other ones in the past that have stated single but have actually not been, including a gg grandfather who married 2 sisters!!!

not sure if you already have these but they could be your people. 

I've looked at 1841 census - I see what you mean; the birth cert of Elizabeth might provide some clues as will the death certs.

.... just had a rethink about the best way to discover if Charlotte was previously married:

I can see a birth on IGI of Mary Pollard to parents John and Charlotte - the following record on FreeBMD is the one I think:

Pollard, Mary - DEC Qrt 1842 registered  Melton Mowbray   GRO ref: vol 15 page 196

The birth cert should state state mothers surname and maiden name.

Just got the marriage certificate in from on me - I was wrong about it saying father deceased .  They are not there at all.  The marital condition is given as bachelor and spinster.

John definitely had 2 children before a married Charlotte as they are on the 1841 census with their grandparents and then with John & Charlotte on the 1851 census. 

The birth certificate I ought to buy is my g grandmother's - Jane born 1846.  I've never bought it as I have a family bible which was given to Jane when she married.
