Another idea I just had: What if we could find Mary's death records? I know she lived all her life (after marriage) in Enfield, MDX. She died before 1891 census (as James and Martha still lived there but she not). I don't have the 1881 census record, but if she still appeared on there, we know she died in that area, in the 1880's. Her parents' names and another age/birthdate should be on there right?

when I said she lived in enfield, the name later used (at the time of her death) was as you know, Edmonton. so we need to find a mary watts who died in edmonton district after 1881 (just found her in 1881 - alive) and 1891 (dead).

The certificate can be ordered online from the GRO (general record office).

You would need to quote  vol 3a  page 268.

    Edmonton  1890 q1.

            www.gro.gov.uk

The pages will guide you through.

Burial records would be harder to trace at this time due to possible area to cover.
The death cert will only be as good as the person suppling the info...ie James or Martha if present at that time. They would be going on what Mary may have told them.

Its not that unusual for a christening to be some years after birth .... and Parish records record the former, with - as Tazzie says, some local vicars being more informative.

++ UPDATE ++ - Nope Birth date has been noted about a month earlier than christening ...

I havent looked yet, but its possible to use the IGI Search Engine to discover other potential siblings in the same Parish ... might be interesting to see with that and the 1841 census if other kids were christened 'late'

++UPDATE++ William - 1803 - in Great M.

Here is an update....just back from the library in MK...

Charles Nash (bach) married Martha Jennings (spins)

  21 Sept 1789  banns called 30 Aug
                                                6 Sept
                                               13 Sept.
Witnesses John Nash & John Franklin
 Charles signed Martha X.

Can confirm the baptism in Grt Missenden as 1806 b Feb bap March.

In the Posse Comitatus of 1798 I found ...

Charles Nash  lab ....living Lee Bucks
     could provide....4 horses  0 Waggons  1 cart

There are children bap in Lee....

   Charles 22 Jan 1792
   Ann       19 Jan 1794
   Sarah     may 8 1795

Even here I could not see a Mary Nash to fit in with say a 1798 birth but the writing was ..BAD!

So the 1806 Mary doesn't seem to be the daughter of this Charles and Martha? BTW thanks for your kind help!  :D
