Yes it is a bit of a muddle isn't it?

I downloaded the image of the relevant parish register to see for myself if the marriage in 1717 was correct - and it is!  :(

I wandered up and down the churchyard in Canonbie (in foul weather, too!) but I could find no trace of  "the" headstone - hoping that if I found it I might be able to check if the transcription had been accurate. No joy, though!  :( :(

As for the change of spellings, I suppose if they were themselves illiterate (possible) it is down to how the "scribe" decided to interpret it!

.....one day I might solve it, but until then it'll have to be filed with the other mysteries in my family history (like the chap who married, fathered 9 children but left no record of his birth in Scotland  or death in England  ???)
