It is not likely that you will have to provide proof of kinship to view his service history.

You do not mention where the marriage took place.  In most states of Australia marriage certs. can be purchased online and no ID required.

We have some chatters on the Australian board who have a very good knowledge of the intracies of NAA and would I'm sure be able to advise you.

You could consider postingon the Aust. board.

That would be of interest I,m sure, but to learn what he was doing in Aust. you may like to pursue the records from the NAA.
Have you looked at the site yet?
It can be  a lttle complicated if you are not used to it so here is a quick tutorial.

http://www.naa.gov.au

Record search>search as a guest> [no signing in or such]>Keywords>enter just your g.father's name, nothing else>search>display results>

You may find in the index entries that come up, if any do, your man's record.  It may already have a sign with it saying 'view digital copy'

If not, explore the site a little and you will find the way to request a copy.  The charge is small and you may learn a lot.
