Hi Carol

In my experience if there is only a mother's name then it indicates either that the child is illegitimate or that the mother is a widow.

You can only find this out by looking at the original - if the child is 'baseborn' then it will be marked as the parish would then pursue the father (if the mother knew who he was and would tell) to serve a bastardy order which would oblige him to pay for the child's upbringing.

After quite some time off due to illness, I am back trying to trace my 4 x great-grandparents.
I believe Rhoda's parents could be Thomas Hartburn 1763-1840 and Elizabeth Dayburn 1771-1855.
But that's as far as I have got.
Any help is much appreciated.

Image of Joseph Jefferson’s baptism confirms he was the illegitimate son of Jane.

Here is the Bt of the marriage of Joseph Jefferson and Rhoda Hartburn. Witnesses were Esther Doughty, Robert Coates and John Johnson ( witnesses can be worth following up in case they were relatives).
