Missing relatives- Emily's family?
« on: Thursday 21 June 07 08:37 BST (UK) »
Found the following (extracted) record on IGI:
Emily GILMORE
born 19 Oct.1880 Antrim, Ballymoney, Cork, Ireland
father- John Gilmore      mother- Margaret Getty Gilmore

Ballymoney is in County Antrim and not far from Aghadowey where John was born but Cork???

Now, in family tree I have a John Gilmore (c1842-1885 Clooney Terrace, Derry) married (1868?) Margaret Getty. Children:
1. James Getty Gilmore (c1869-2 Oct.1890 Clooney Terrace).
2. Annie Gilmore (c1871-18 June 1891 Clooney Terrace).
?3. Eliza Gilmore (1872?).
4. Emily Gilmore, bapt. 4 Aug.1880 Waterside Presbyterian Church, Derry. This is probably the Emily born 19 Oct.1880.
Wonder if there were other children bet.1873/1879 & 1881/1885?

John Gilmore and children James & Annie are buried in Derry City Cemetery. Thanks to the wonderful records there I was able to confirm John's parents & birthplace. No sign of Margaret or Eliza & Emily. Wondered if Margaret could have re-married?
Also, John Gilmore died 1885 when James was about 16 & Annie about 14. Directories list family in 1884 but not in 1889 so who was looking after the children in the house?  And what happened to Eliza and Emily?

Lots of questions here- hoping someone can help find some of the anwers as this branch of the family is quite a mystery.

Thanks anyway Mossy.
James Getty Gilmore and Annie are the two children buried in Derry with father but would like to know what happened to mother Margaret and the other two children Eliza and Emily.
Still can't figure out the way Emily's birth is recorded on IGI but if it is supposed to be Ballymoney, Antrim (not CORK) it is possible the family didn't move to Waterside, Derry until after her birth.
P.S.- Margaret Getty was from Gortahurk near Draperstown which is probably why 1st 3 children born there but not sure if the family were actually living there or if she just went back home to have the children.

Thanks for the marriage Mary. Am now wondering if the Emily Gilmour you found (1879) is the Emily on IGI (1880).

Thank you again Mary. At least I can forget about the Emily in 1879.

Actually have an old photograph in the house labelled (for a change) James G. Gilmore and Maggie Gilmore taken at a studio in Ballymena. Maggie is slightly older than James but no clue who she could be. Another unsolved mystery I suppose.

Just to update this old thread I've found new information while searching for something else (as one does).

1901 census- Margaret Gilmour and daughters Lizzie, Rachel and Emily are living on Spencer Road.
1911 census- Margaret and daughters Lizzie and Emily still there but Margaret says 5 children/2 living. Found Rachel's death in civil index (1907) and wht looks like her birth in 1875 (Magherafelt district).
1912 Ulster Covenant- Margaret, Lizzie and Emily listed at 124 Spencer Road (have looked at it on Google Streetview- just along from Clooney Terrace where they lived earlier).

Still don't understand why they aren't listed with John and other 2 children in cemetery record but will try office again next time I'm in Derry and ask for death details of Margaret, Lizzie, Rachel and Emily after 1912.
