« on: Sunday 24 June 07 17:28 BST (UK) »
I have just found out that a relative  Albert George Lomax born 1848 Chediston Suffolk Uk emigrated to Australia.

Albert is buried in Forbes Cemetery NSW died in 1928

He went on to marry an Unknown Clifford, & took her name.She was connected to property called the Clifford Ranch, Forbes, NSW

he went on to marry a Mary Jane Shervington  born 1864.

Married 31 .5 1891 & had the following children

Albert 1893
Kathleen 1895
Roy 1898
Lillian 1900
Edward G 1903
Dorothy H 1906 all the surnames CLIFFORD

Could anyone find out when albert arrived in Australia? & the name of the ship
Where is the Clifford Ranch?
Who was the Unknown Clifford he married & when?

Is anyone connected to the family as i have quite a lot of information on the Lomax family in the uk if I can help anyone fill in any gaps

I,am sorry this a long request but would appreciate any help or guidance with my search.

Many thanks in advance Judi

Hi Judi,

I think the easiest way possibly to find out more about the parents of the Clifford children would be to get one of their birth certificates. I located them on the Online Index and their father is listed as Albert G. and mother Mary J. For Roy's birth the mother was listed as Jane. Was the mother  Mary Jane Shervington? The district given was Forbes. Could Albert have taken the name Clifford? Lots of possibilites suggest themselves.

There was no sign of a marriage for an Albert Lomax to anyone in the NSW BDM for that time period. Nor could I find a marriage for a Mary Shervington.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

That was good finding Dee.
Judi did mention that  Albert G. did take Clifford name and I for one would like to know why.
Very unusual if all is "above board' if you won't mind my saying so!
Sue
PS just adding that there is a ww1 war service history for a Roy Clifford b. c.1897 in Forbes and he says his father [NOK] is GEORGE Clifford of Grange Rd, Forbes.
If it's yours, looks like he is also using his second given name instead of first.

I think this should read ORANGE ROAD, not Grange RD and it looks on the map to be well outside Forbes proper as in probably farming land.

Hi all

Thank you so much for all the hard work you have put in to help me on this search, I will follow all the leads up & fill in the gaps.

Please could someone tell me what information I would expect to find on an Australian birth certificate? Is it the same as in the Uk ie fathers name & occupation & mothers name & Address etc?

Once again thanks to you all

Hi Judi

A NSW birth certificate (civil reg started 1856) is somewhat more comprehensive than an English one - as are all our certificates. It usually contains

    * Child's name
    * Date & place of birth
    * Sex of child
    * Father's name, occupation, age & birthplace
    * Mother's maiden name, age & birthplace
    * Parents' marriage date & place
    * Previous children
          o alive -
                + to 1900 - usually just the number of males and females
                + from 1900 - usually listed by name & age
          o dead -
                + to 1974 - usually just the number of males and females
                + from 1974 - by name
    * Informant's name, signature, residence, relationship - the latter can indicate the extent to which the information may be relied on
    * Date & place of registration

The later the date, the more likely that all the data will be included.

In NSW you can purchase a transcription - cheaper than a certificate (but not a legal document)

Hi there,
I’m very interested in the UK information you have regarding Albert George Lomax/Clifford. I believe his Mother and Father were Lomax and when he got to Australia he changed surname.
