Wigston Magna/Parva
« on: Sunday 24 June 07 18:24 BST (UK) »
If anybody lives in either of these villages would they know if the vicarages were used by families who were evacuees from London during WWII?

And would anybody know the name of the vicars between 1940 and 1946 in these villages?

Greeting’s ….Jillie.

Wigston Parva is 11.2 miles
South West of  Wigston Magna.

Just north of the A 5 and to the South East of Burbage.

Or did you mean Glen Parva ?
Which is only 3.4 Miles West  from Wigston Magna.

I can have a look for you this week at the Records Office Wigston
And post back findings on this thread then.

Deffinitely Wigston Magna and I'm told it was Wigston Parva though they do seem to have been rather a long way apart so I suppose it could be Glen Parva. Unfortuately the people who were the evacuees are no longer alive so I can't ask :-\

would you mind looking up both Wigston parava and Glen Parva? don't worry if you can't

I really appreciate it

thanks

Jillie

Greeting’s Again Jillie ( sorry got that wrong last time )

I know Leicester played hoist to the Evacuees WWII.

Although Wigston Parva was & still is a very small hamlet
(Blink and you have missed it )
So.....It does not seem likely but I could be wrong ?

Plus it’s close to Coventry which got it bad during the blitz
My Father was a Fireman during the War & he always told us about riding on the back of the engine all the way to Coventry…….

Any way I will have a look at all the possibilities for you at the Records Office
And report back on this thread ( Thursday )

MIKE.

Thanks Mike

I do appreciate your help. And I'm sure you are correct - if Parva is very close to Coventry it would seem a strange place to send evacuees

HI Jillie,

St. Thomas the Apostle is the Parish Church for South Wigston and Glen Parva (Church known locally as St. Thomas').  There were many evacuees to South Wigston during the war period, many from London and many who did make a permanent home in South Wigston.  I do not know if any were billeted at the Vicarage (which is still in use today).

From 1939 until 1946 the Rev. Jesse Proctor was Vicar followed by Rev. Robin W. Woods from 1946 to 1951.

Hope this helps - Valry
