Is there somewhere in this huge Gunn family, a Sarah Gunn who married Thomas Prior in either 1806 or 1808.
It is the Prior family I am chasing up and this Thomas is very likely of the right line.
I see the name of Hatfield Broad Oak mentioned and it fits, in that decades later, in New Zealand, Sarah Westwood who has ancestry from there married Alfred Prior who's ancestry I have possibly got back (with the help of Rootschat friends) to a Thomas Prior who married a Sarah Gunn.
I actually have this question up on the London board but googled the name of Sarah Gunn and up came all this.
If so, it appears that maybe the families of Sarah Westwood and Alfred Prior who married in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1898 knew each other.

I am also researching this Gunn family going back from Sarah Gunn  born about 1786, a dau ghter of John Gunn and Ann Bright - and four generations back from her there is a John Gunn who I have seen on some websires as having been born in Cogill, Caithness, Scotland in 1672. He married Elizabeth Barker in 1695 in Little Easton, Essex.
How correct is the Cogill info as i cannot locate it on any map.

Hello Robin

I'm the culprit who put most of this info under this one name section 3.5 years ago....just a collection of Gunn's from Essex

My great grandmother being Emma Gunn born 9th August 1850 and Emma being the daughter of George Gunn (born abt 1815 Little Easter, Essex) and Martha Page who married in 1844 South Ockendon.

I lost a lot of data on the Gunn's when I had a lot of problems with a computer I had back then and I haven't looked at the Gunn's since, but somewhere I have a huge family tree on the Gunn's in paper form that someone sent me and I wouldn't have thrown it away, knowing I have it and finding it are somewhat different........

Bryhant - thank you for your reply - I know the feeling of being overwhelmed by the amount of stuff I collect doing these histories - I often search for something that I know I would never throw away.
Do you have any recollection of where Cogill is or is it the name of a house, or do you think I am safer just to leave the whole family in the Dunmow area.

Bryant - just another thought - I see Joane Bernard married Daniel Gunn way back in 1635 - could she possibly be descended from the Baynard family of the area and who were there from the earliest records of Dunmow - the name of Bernard could well have once been Baynard.
I have also been reading about the Dunmow Flitch Trials which is very interesting reading

I don't recall any Gunn's born Scotland let alone Cogill, Caithness, Scotland but it doesn't look like Cogill is a place?

http://www.caithness.org/atoz/

I note that I have the date of the marriage of George Gunn and Martha Page and also details of witness's, and father's etc....that means I have the marriage cert, yet I haven't re-entered that info on my database

I think I will go Gunn family building as at this moment in time "I know nothing"  :-[
