Sorry DS I absolutely understood what you meant:) No worries.
I spent a few (ok many) hours but I cracked it. As someone who had to learn cursive writing as a kid I could see right away that it was a T and not an S and shame on the enumerator for not crossing the T. Oh well. It was a great lesson in how to find people though. Thank you for that. Now, I need to go back and check some other dead ends using the same kind of mind set.
I have managed to get the sons of the first Joseph Tate in order from 1841 to 1901. I have now started on the girls and found them in various domestic service scenarios and living arrangements up until 1871 but that's when I lost the daughter Mary Tait/Tate.
There are various possibilities of course: she got married, she emigrated...she died. I found some of her siblings in 1871 with a 4 year old niece in the household so I got excited thinking that this was her child and she had married but now I don't think it's Mary's daughter ...Her name is Hannah and she's 4. I think she may be the daughter of one of Ellen (wife of John) Tate's sisters. But, that is just speculation on my part. I need to investigate it further.
So I plod on...
Thank you again.
