DS...I'm not going to give up yet. There is still a lot of investigation to do. I'd like to get to know some of the history of the area and what life was like for the people that lived there.

Hey Mary Ann

I was not, for one minute, suggesting that you might give up on the pursuit of the “whole picture”.

I was only referring to the 1891 census entry, in case you had any problem finding it.

DS ;)

Sorry DS I absolutely understood what you meant:) No worries.

I spent a few (ok many) hours but I cracked it. As someone who had to learn cursive writing as a kid I could see right away that it was a T and not an S and shame on the enumerator for not crossing the T. Oh well. It was a great lesson in how to find people though. Thank you for that. Now, I need to go back and check some other dead ends using the same kind of mind set.

I have managed to get the sons of the first Joseph Tate in order from 1841 to 1901. I have now started on the girls and found them in various domestic service scenarios and living arrangements up until 1871 but that's when I lost the daughter Mary Tait/Tate.

There are various possibilities of course: she got married, she emigrated...she died. I found some of her siblings in 1871 with a 4 year old niece in the household so I got excited thinking that this was her child and she had married but now I don't think it's Mary's daughter ...Her name is Hannah and she's 4. I think she may be the daughter of one of Ellen (wife of John) Tate's sisters. But, that is just speculation on my part. I need to investigate it further.

So I plod on...

Thank you again.
