Mary, I think you might have found something here. Checked IGI and found 6 children born to John Pollock & Martha Dale: Samuel (1862), Sarah (1864), MARY (1866), John (1870), William (1872), John (1873). All born in Scotland.
William McCurdy's marriage gives his parents as William McCurdy & Mary Pollock so it is possible that Mary Pollock born 1866 (dau. of John & Martha) is his mother & Martha Dale his grandmother. That would fit with family story (& 1901 census) saying William McCurdy lived with 'aunts' in Ireland.
Still can't find marriage for Mary Pollock & William McCurdy, or birth for William McCurdy, but now have a few more clues to follow. Thank you so much.

William McCurdy's birthplace supposed to be Co. Derry & his great-grand-daughter has marriage in which he gave parents as William McCurdy & Mary Pollock. Tried Scotland's People for their marriage (McCurdy-Pollock) but nothing came up. Can find no William McCurdy b. Co.Derry that even remotely fits his age but wondering if mother was unmarried when he was born, then birth would be under William Pollock (several of those in Co.Derry for the right period).
