St John's, Egremont
« on: Thursday 28 June 07 01:02 BST (UK) »
Hi

Could sks help me with the following query:

I have a marriage certificate for my gr grandparents who were married at St John's Egremont on 16th March 1907.

I was always led to believe that the parish church for Egremont was St Mary's and St Michael, so would St John's be the RC church for the parish.  What confuses me that the certificate reads:

"1907 Marriage solemized at St John's Church in the parish of Egremont in the County of Cumberland" and "Married in the aforesaid church according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church by Superintendant Registrar's Certificate and not signed by someone with the title of Rev etc

Many thanks for your time

Have you tried googling it?   Is it possible that the parish of Egremont actually covers an area containg more than one church?   There do seem to be various St John churches nearby.   www.genuki.com might help.
I am sure the Cumberland FHS or local record office will know if nobody answers you here.

I think it is probably St Johns church in Bigrigg, classed as being in the parish of Egremont.  It's just up the road.  It is still in use, and looks like a lovely village church.  If you google it, there's a photo of it on one of the websites.  There's also a St John's church on Egremont Road, Hensingham.  But I think your best best would be the one in Bigrigg.

Rosemary :)

Hi

I will try Genuki and take a look at Bigrigg.

I do know that the grooms sister married a gentleman from Bigrigg so it could fit.

Many thanks.

Regards
