Cornish in Australia
« on: Thursday 28 June 07 19:28 BST (UK) »
I bought a book in a charity shop recently, which I thought someone on the list might be interested in, now that I've finished with it.

It's called "The Cornish in Australia" and was published in Melbourne in 1983 as part of the Australian Ethnic Heritage Series. If your Cornish people went to Oz you will find this really interesting: Extracts from diaries and letters home to Cornwall and lots of fascinating stuff. Apparently, at the time (mid-late 1800s) there was a saying that at the bottom of every hole in the ground you will find a Cornishman.

Yours for what I paid for it in the charity shop, plus postage, if you're interested.
Linda

The Cornish travelled all over the world. Alot of them were tin miners. Work in Cornwall has always been bad, even now in 2007. Tourist ism being the only real industry, wages are below the average.
