Nottingham convict - newspaper lookup please COMPLETED
« on: Friday 29 June 07 00:18 BST (UK) »
Hi from Qld

I have a convict who was tried at Nottingham Assizes on 16th July, 1812, but I don't know for what crime he was convicted.

Nottingham Library seems to hold a lot of old newspapers and this probably would have been reported as he received Life.

Details are:  Miles Lake, Native Place Nottingham, Hosier, 38 years old.  He was transported to Australia in 1813 on board "Earl Spencer".

On his convict indent he is bracketed with Gervas Copley and Will Stanley, who appear to have been convicted at the same time.

Would appreciate any help.  I have some details of his life and family in Australia if anyone is interested.

Annette

Hi Annette

Haven't found why he was sent to Australia, but this might interest you about his death.

Hi Annette,
My ancestor was tried at the Quarter Sessions in Nottingham in 1815, and the Notts Archives were able to send me copies of the court documents.  A Rootschatter later kindly visited the Archives and photographed some other documents relating to the case.
Suggest you contact the Archives to see what they may have from the Assizes  :)

em, What an excellent find!  It answers Annette's question re the crime (I see there are two references with Miles as ?Luke in one).

I have to admit that I Googled for "Miles Lake" trying to find something for the previous thread at:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,241152
but there were so many hits I didn't go through them ...  And obviously didn't persevere enough with refining the parameters.

Sentenced to death, eh - but all except one of those sentenced to death was reprieved (the report of the execution of the unlucky exception very sad to read).

Annette, I see that a William STANLEY is also mentioned on the URL given by em but there doesn't seem to be any sign of Gervas COPLEY.

Hi

That's just great Em.  Answers my questions, so am really thrilled.

Would love to know how you found it, as I have googled and looked at every possible website I could find, and got nothing.
I emailed the Nottingham archives and had a reply that the Assizes were held at the National Archives.

From the list of newspapers at the Nottingham Library I thought there might be a possibility, but had no idea that there was information on line.

With thanks again ;D

Hi Annette,

Following em's brilliant find, I managed to find it by Googling (knowing it was there and so it had to be possible to find!) for:
"miles lake" + assizes

That gets only 4 hits - two are irrelevant and the other two are your post on RootsChat and em's find.

The Mansfield site would also be a great site for anyone with a particular interest in Mansfield - the home page is:
http://web.ukonline.co.uk/lost-mansfield/
Also the Old Mansfield site at:
http://www.old-mansfield.org.uk/home.htm

The newspaper section of the first site at:
http://web.ukonline.co.uk/lost-mansfield/mnews/index.htm
would be of wider interest given that it includes extracts for various years from the
Nottingham Journal
Nottingham Review
Midland Gazette
Mansfield Reporter

PS: Just had a look at the Nottinghamshire Resources section of the Nottinghamshire board - sure enough, Jane Swan posted the URL back in Nov 2006  :-[

Hi

How lucky was I then when you look at how many years have been indexed and how many haven't.  Great sites.

Hi Annette and Jap

It was just one of those days that when I put my search parameters in they just came up trumps.

I noticed Annette that you are researching Cooke.  My dad's family are Cooke (from Northern Ireland).  Haven't started that line yet.  Still ploughing through my mum's side (Cleeve and Beese, Bees, Bristol area).

Happy researching
