SMYTH/SMITH b.c.1832 - COMPLETED
« on: Friday 29 June 07 03:17 BST (UK) »
Not sure if I will get anywhere with this but I'll post anyway.
I have a Terence/Terrance SMYTH/SMITH b.c1832 in my family tree.  Other family members believe he was born somewhere in Australia BUT no-one as yet has found his place of birth.
Terence married 1856 in SA Cecily CONNOR, and on the marriage record Terence's father is Bernard and Terence's age is 22.
I know that they were Catholic so it's quite possible that the birth, if in Australia, wasnt recorded.  Some early SA records have the surname as SMYTH but it quite quickly changes to SMITH.
Is it possible to find Terence's birth record either in Aust. or overseas.  My overseas stumbling block of course is that he was probably Irish.
Hoping, if someone has time, they may be able to check some Aust. records other than Sth Aust.
I have all their SA history so don't need anything else just some lookups for Terence's birth if possible.
Kind regards - Sashar

Sashar, I cannot find his birth in Victoria.  Both Terence and Bernard do appear as forenames along with SMITH / SMYTH in the indexes.

I am so glad my not never stayed in SA - no birthplaces on things until 1907 - how awful is that.  :'(

And it is unfortunate that Terence and Cecily did not stray over the border into Victoria.

Do you know of any siblings for Terence?

There is a Susan SMYTH, getting married in St Patricks Adelaide 1858, aged 22, with a father Bernard - do you think that she is a sister? have you checked her out?  Married James CONNELL

Hi Christine,
I hadn't noticed Susan SMYTH before, that will give me something to follow.  Thankyou for that.
I think I found a Bernard SMYTH buried at Laura in SA - will have to recheck.
At the time I couldn't see a connection but now you've made me think a bit more laterally.   I was getting a bit bogged down with this lot.
I'll follow Susan & James CONNELL and see what I can find in SA.
Thanks for your help - Sashar

Hi Jenn,
Yes, I had seen that arrival of Bernard SMYTH.
According to the Bisa he was b. c1816 Belfast died 1894 Laura SA married 1852 at Mt Barker, Margaret SLATTERY and had children, Mary 1853-1917, Joseph 1855-1912, Sarah NOONAN  1858-1933, Mgt Gallivan 1860- ,  Ellen 1863-
I can only find the births of Mary and Sarah on the Digger Cd's.

I've been following Christine's lead of Susan SMYTH b.1836 with a father Bernard.   Ive found the birth of a son, Joseph CONNELL 1878 but that is all.  The Bisa says she also had Patrick 1869, unamed child 1872, Francie 1873 and Joseph 1878.

Joseph CONNELL m. Mary SHERLOCK in 1913 at Marrabel SA.  They had children:-
Susan 1914,  James 1916,  Mary 1917, Matthew 1919, Teresa 1921, Catherine 1922, Joan 1924, Ellen 1926 & Margaret 1928.

Not sure where this is all leading me to but I think the Bernard that arrived on the Tomatin is a different one although I suppose he could have been a brother to Terrence.

Let me know what you think - I could use some more brainpower -  thanks for your input, Sashar

Hi Jenn & Christine,
Having slept on this overnight - if Terence and/or Susan were born in Aust. then it would be highly likely (unless they returned to Ireland) that his father Bernard should have died in Aust.
I'm pretty sure the Bernard SMYTH who died at Laura is not Terence's father, so is there a death in Victoria.
I'm thinking Victoria as Terence's 2 eldest sons moved, married, had children there.   Maybe Grandpa Bernard SMYTH was living in Vic.?
Just a wild guess, but if someone could check for me I think I would be happy to lay this to rest and assume that Terence SMYTH/SMITH was born in Ireland and family have it wrong.
Thanks for all your help - Sashar

Hello  there Sashar

my thoughts were that the Bernard who arrived in 1840 is the chap at Laura  which is what the BISA said

will check Victoria again for you

There are a few Bernard Smiths born in Vic from 1858 onwards.
There are 30 kids born with a father Bernard SMITH / SMYTH from 1858 - 1888.

3 marriages Victoria

Bernard SMYTH  m  Elizabeth LOORIM 1861 / 350
Bernard SMITH  m Olivia Frances Josephine BOYES 1863/161
Bernard SMITH (born Dublin)  m  Mary FOLEY 1874 /1776

Deaths in Victoria to 1888.

Bernard SMYTH died aged 38, parents unknown,  Born "CAVA", 1872 / 10332
Bernard SMITH died aged 66, Melbourne Sth, parents unknown, 1881 / 5256
Bernhard SMITH died aged 64, Alexandra, father Hy Lord SMITH, mother Elizabeth VONASE  1885 / 10792 (another one who died has  similar parents listed as Lord Henry SMITH and Jane Mary VOSE)

Do SA death certs list children's names?  Have you checked out the bloke at Laura's burial ?  What makes you certain it is not him?

ChristineR  :)
