Does anyone know where Watten Drup is???
« on: Thursday 09 December 04 18:51 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

Does anyone know where Watten Drup is in Gloucestershire?

I have an entry in a London Census which gives an ancestors place of birth as this. I have scoured Genuki and have found a place called Watton.

I suspect this has been spelt phonetically as a Londoner would not be familiar with the name.

Can anyone help please?

possibly Whaddon but what the Drup is, who knows? Perhaps a valley - Whaddon Drop?
Second favourite would be associated with Wootton but if I say this to myself in what I fancy is a West Country dialect it does not come out as Watten but just more Woo still. :D

Watten Drup seems to be a Casualty Clearing Stations posted for the  Duke of Cornwalls Light Inf, 2, Gloucestershire Regt. The name signifies a birchfield, and was from the town of Berkely in Gloucestershire.

Hope this helps

Best wishes

Wow Kapajoy - I'm impressed. Was this a bit of old knowledge or have you got a search engine far better than Google? I really, really need to know, pretty please ???

Hello Kay,
                 Hello Hackstaple,         :)

Thanks for the info. I guessed it was an old name as I got it from the 1851 census for Middlesex.

Do I take it that Watten Drup was in Berkely?

Best wishes,

Hi
Yes I assume it must have been in the Berkley area, as it said from Berkley.
