Papillon ("Pamps") Hall, Lubenham
« on: Friday 29 June 07 14:05 BST (UK) »
As part of the research into my family line, I am doing some digging into Papillon Hall in Lubenham, Leicestershire.  This has been a subject that has fascinated me for some years now and the Lubenham local website has some excellent background information on the local stories.

Does anyone out there have any family anecdotes that I could add to my story.  If you have, I'd love to hear from you.

Also, if anyone has managed to find the hall on the 1851, 1861 or 1881 census returns, please let me know as I haven't been able to find it yet.

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi

In 1881 have a look at RG11/3120 Folio 5 Page 2

or search for

George Clarke b1841 Great Bowden (He is a Game Keeper)

Although his address is shown as Papillion’s Hall (or an attempt to show that :-\), I suspect that he is living in the lodge and that the actual Hall property next door is uninhabited. Next door to him, the other way, is a Charles Crisp, Shepherd who is in the same property on the 1891 census.

In 1851 it does not seem to be specifically mentioned but if you use reference HO107/2079 Folio 414 and click on any of the entries and then view the image it should take you to page 2 of 31 images for Lubenham. You could then page through (if you wish) and try to work out which property it is from the relative position of other families and properties on later censuses.

Similarly in 1861 it does not seem to be mentioned specifically but if you use reference RG9/2249 Folio 111 and click on any of the entries and then view the image it should take you to page 1 of 27 images for Lubenham to page through (if you wish).

You can also achieve the same initial result by simply entering “Lubenham” into the “Civil Parish” box, on each census search page, and leaving everything else blank.

There does not seem to be any census entry as “grand” as the one in 1871 appearing in other years.

Hope that helps a little bit.

DS ;)

Greeting’s ….

Extract from my book History of Leicestershire in 1777

Quote :~

The only seat shown in this section was
“ Pampilion ( Papillon ) Hall “ near to Lubenham .
Built 1622 ~ 24  By David Papillon a Hugenot.
The Hall was Octagonal in shape, with only one entrance
During the 16th. Century the hall was let to a farmer and latter became a Hunting Lodge
The house was rebuilt by Lutyens in 1903.
But was demolished 1951.
End of Quote.

The only Census ref I can find is that of 1841.

Papillion Hall  :~ Willian Swoger  60 Grazer Y.

HO 107 / 591 / Book 2 / Folder 14 / Page 23.
Key word …= SWOGER.

So could it have been a Hunting Lodge ( Non residential )
During the Census
Hope this helps

MIKE.
