No, no, no!!! Marriages took place in Registry Office for a variety of reasons.
In the 1860s only certain ministers were allowed to perform weddings and while a couple getting married could have these ministers perform a ceremony they then also had to go to the Registry Office for a civil ceremony. Church of Ireland rectors and some Presbyterian ministers were authorised to perform marriages but I do know of many Reformed Presbyterians who got married in their own church and then had to go to Registry Office. Interestingly, the newspaper announcement of the marriage always said the marriage took place in the Reformed Presbyterian Church.
Also know of lots of other Registry Office marriages were both bride and groom were same religion, and even in some cases attended same church, but wanted a quiet wedding or faced parental dis-approval.
