Judy,
Having written this someone may tell you precisely where Righeads was  :) :)

You may have found out already that it doesn't appear as an address in the 1841 or 1851 Census. There is a sketch map in the front of Moores 'Memorials of Hutton & Corrie' published in the 1960s  His sketch map is based on the Survey by Cawaford and Son for the atlas of Scotland as published by John Thomson, Edinburgh 1828.   He locates Righeads on it.

It is roughly  :)  W of Gillesbie and NE of Shaw - both of which are on my OS Pathfinder map. looked for it on www.old-maps.co.uk but with no success.

Depending on where you live it is possible to view the book of Memorials referred to.

Dear Reiver,
Thanks for the information on Righeads. Funnily enough I have quite a few births in H & C but on all the sheets of OPR's I have ordered from Scotlandspeople I have only found it mentioned once. But I now have an approximate location. If any one else has any  other I would be grateful.
I find Scotlandspeople site rather expensive for research but once you've got the right person it is good.

Can you tell me a little more about the Memorial's of Hutton & Corrie produced in the 1960's. I don't think I will be able to get to see it but where is it kept and can anyone order transcribed copies of it?

Hello Judy
In the 1960s most (all?) of the Memorials in Dumfrieshire graveyards were surveyed by 4 or 5 genealogists.  About 40 of them.  These were published in a series of foolscap sized books - though not for sale. It was possible to consult them - and even borrow them - via Inter Library Loan - though I believe this is no longer the case. They are still held for reference in a number of larger libraries.   In the front of each were historiacal detals of the parish, often a map showing places mentioned on the memorials (Righeads etc.)

Many of these are being republished both by the Dumfries &  Galloway Family History Society and the Langholm Archive Centre.  However the more recent ones tend to be smaller (A2) size which makes it difficult to reproduce the maps.

Those who research in Scotland will know that ladies retained - is that the correct word :) -
their maiden names and hence the memorial referred to those rather than her married surname - in most cases.

Do you by any chance live in or near the SW of Scotland?

Regards
Reiver
